If you look back at the start of the year and look for players who have been in contention to win on the final day you will see Victor Hovland up there most of the year. For 3 of the 4 rounds he has been playing some great golf but there is always one round that lets him down and he doesn't quite make it.
Yesterday that all changed as he beat McCarthy in the playoff at the memorial tournament. With both players finishing on -7 Hovland made par on the first play off to seal victory from McCarthy who had a bogey on his 72nd hole to drop into a playoff then made bogey again. It was Hovland's 4th PGA tour title and 1st in over a year.
The course was the 2nd hardest this year after last weeks PGA Championship but the top players all shone to the top with Scheffler shooting a brilliant 65 to finish -6 and put the players under pressure still out on the course. McIlroy had been favourite at the start of the day as he went out as joint leader but a tough day on the par 5s ruined his chances and he signed for a 73 to finish 4 behind the leaders.
On another note from the LPGA Tour a massive well done should go out to Rose Zhang. She became the first female to win her debut event since 1951. Having won her 2nd straight NCAA title in May she turned pro just 9 days ago. She also won the ladies amateur event at Augusta in April, golf may have found a new superstar for the game.
